Infant cannot tell what is wrong. It only cries so examine carefully. If everything looks normal, Commonest cause is intestinal colic due to hunger, worms and constipation. Feed the baby.Give soap stick to empty the bowels.
Carmicide 1 tsp x tds orGripe water 1 tsp x tds.
For severe colic, Inj. Baralgan ½ cc IM
For older children Syp. Mendazole 1 tsp bd x 3.
What to look for? Look for bulging-fontanelle and neck stiffness to R/o Meningitis.Inspect both eardrums carefully with a good torch, especially if the child is pulling at a ear repeatedly.
Refer to E.N.T surgeon, if redness or swelling or bulging of ear drum.Examine the abdomen carefully, for Lump, distension, visible peristalsis or tenderness.Examine and palpate all limbs, chest and back of signs of injury or swelling.Look at the Genitalia for Phimosis of infection. Third month colic:Episodes of crying due to abdominal colic are common in 2nd to 4 months. Hold the baby in upright position, tap on back for burping.
